On the October 25 episode of AEW Dynamite, Ric Flair was revealed as Tony Khan’s ‘very special gift’ to Sting.

Sting announced his retirement plans on last week’s AEW Dynamite, revealing that Revolution 2024 will bring an end to his in-ring career.
The appearance of Ric Flair on Dynamite marked the first time in over twenty years that the pair have been reunited on TBS.
As noted in our earlier report, it was alluded to that Flair would be making this last run alongside Sting, making appearances until AEW Revolution but there weren’t concrete dates or details revealed.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer has now revealed a potential business reason for Flair’s appearance on AEW television along with details of scrapped plans, saying:
“I know that he was gonna go there right when that Dark Side of the Ring thing came out.
“I don’t know this but I was assuming that he was gonna go as the manager of Andrade.
“But he and Tony Khan had a verbal deal, and then after Dark Side came out, it was not the right time.
“It’s the (TV) contract year and I think they’re really trying to hotshot as many stars for ratings purposes because of the name value and things like that, but by doing that you’re also ageing the show, and nostalgia when it comes to TV ratings is usually a short drug, not a long-term thing.”

Meltzer has also revealed the advice that he gave to Tony Khan regarding Sting’s retirement plans, suggesting the AEW owner look towards Pro Wrestling NOAH’s treatment of the Great Muta for inspiration.
We’ll keep you updated if any further news emerges on Flair’s AEW future, but he hasn’t been officially announced for any more appearances as of yet.
