To kick off tonight’s WWE SmackDown, AJ Styles made his return to the show in front of a thrilled Nashville, Tennessee audience.
However, his return promo was short-lived as he was interrupted by Carmelo Hayes.
While Styles tried to make a match for right here tonight against Hayes and he declined, they were both met by LA Knight.
Knight challenged Hayes to face Styles right now with the stipulation that if Hayes won, he would get a title shot against Knight for the WWE United States Championship.
There would end up being no finish to the match after an apparent injury would lead to it being called off.
Styles appeared to suffer an injury to his ankle, being noted by commentary that the WWE doctor at ringside had speculated that Styles had perhaps ‘sprained his ankle’.
After another exchange, the match would ultimately be stopped by referee Charles Robinson when Styles was determined unable to continue.
Later in a backstage segment, it was revealed that Styles had suffered some kind of injury to his left ankle and was being evaluated at a local hospital.
