A WWE star has reflected on their controversial Money in the Bank ladder match win and shared how the backlash felt backstage.

After James Ellsworth was the actual person to grab the Women’s Money in the Bank briefcase on behalf of Carmella in 2017, fans were certainly outraged.
However, Carmella has recently opened up about the situation and noted that she didn’t even know she was planned to win until the day of the show.

In an appearance on the Garcia Twins’ (fka Bella Twins) podcast, the Nikki and Brie Show, Carmella said:
“I didn’t grab it, James did and then he threw it down to me and I knew fans were going to be so upset about it, but I felt like that was great because everyone’s going to be talking about it …
“I know originally it was supposed to be Becky, she was winning it the second time … so then we showed up that day of and we kind of like talking through things and it was like ‘and Carmella is going to win’ and I’m like what?
“Like oh my God, like I couldn’t believe it. I hadn’t even been on the main roster for a year yet.”

On the podcast Carmella explained that while the original plan was to have a rematch for the briefcase and crown another winner, she ended up winning the second match as well.
Carmella credits the pivot to her hard work and a passionate promo she gave after the first win which impressed those in charge.
Elsewhere in the chat, Carmella discussed motherhood and what she has been doing on her time away from WWE, including launching a women’s health community.
