Hertha Berlin vs FC Koln: Billy Goats' European quest continues after brushing Hertha aside

A back-and-forth affair at the Olympiastadion saw FC Cologne defeat Hertha Berlin 3-1 thanks to two first half goals in three minutes, seeing ‘Die Geißböcke’ extend their unbeaten streak against Hertha to five matches, their longest streak since 1991.

The match began as sleepy as the atmosphere in a mostly empty Olympiastadion, with neither side finding their rhythm. Yet, it was Cologne who broke the deadlock 30 minutes in when Mark Uth bombed down the left-wing and picked out the team’s leading scorer Anthony Modeste in the box and the prolific striker headed home from close-range. It went from bad to worse for the hosts just three minutes later, when former Hertha man Ondrej Duda latched onto a rebounded cross and fired home from the top of the box, extending Cologne’s lead over his old team to two goals. Looking to pull themselves back in the game, Hertha pushed forward in search of a goal, and their pressure would tell in the 58th minute when a Vladimír Darida free-kick made it through the pile of bodies and drifted into the back of the net behind the unsuspecting Marvin Schwäbe, cutting Cologne’s lead in half. While that goal appeared to give Hertha a boost, Cologne managed to kill the game in the remaining minutes and fend off any attacks from the home side as they pushed to find a dramatic equalizer. A strike in stoppage time from Jan Thielmann on the breakaway was the final nail in the Hertha coffin, sending Steffen Baumgart’s men away from the capital with all three points. A second defeat in three matches now leaves ‘Die Alte Dame’ vulnerable to falling into the relegation zone in the Bundesliga if results elsewhere do not go their way.
