AS Roma vs Feyenoord: Mour the merrier as ‘Special One’ reigns again

AS Roma defeated Feyenoord 1-0 in the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) Final. By winning the tournament, José Mourinho also became the first ever manager to win all three of UEFA’s active club competitions.

Both sides started the final as joint-top scorers in the competition with 28 goals each, but it was underdogs Feyenoord who began more positively, pressing the Roma players high up the pitch. Yet, for all their pressure, they struggled to create a chance of any significance. The Italian side failed to create any goalmouth action until the half hour mark where they broke the deadlock with their one and only shot on target in the half. Gianluca Mancini played a superb cross-field pass into the box to Nicolò Zaniolo, who controlled the ball with his chest before dinking it past the onrushing goalkeeper. Feyenoord started the second half with incredible intensity, creating several chances, and Mancini almost scored an own-goal after deflecting a cross onto the post. The woodwork was stuck again just moments later, as Tyrell Malacia unleashed a thunderous effort on goal, but Rui Patrício managed to just about palm it onto the post. The competition’s top scorer, Cyriel Dessers, thought he was about to level the tie when through on goal, but an incredible last ditch tackle from Roger Ibañez denied the striker as the minutes agonisingly ticked by for La Lupa. Despite the Dutch side throwing everything forward to equalise, all three of Mourinho’s centre-backs threw themselves in front of everything, battling hard to protect their one-goal lead. Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini almost finished the tie off minutes from the end, but was superbly denied by Justin Bijlow. In true Mourinho fashion, his side dug deep to hold onto their one-goal lead and become the very first club to lift the UECL trophy. The victory also marks Roma’s maiden success in any major European competition, and their first trophy since a Coppa Italia triumph in 2008.
