Tony Khan has hinted at Mercedes Mone’s injury possibly changing AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door plans.

At NJPW Resurgence, Willow Nightingale defeated Mercedes Mone to become the first NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion. The match was marred by a serious ankle injury that Mone suffered that changed the planned outcome of the bout.
During the AEW Double Or Nothing media call, AEW President Tony Khan was asked about the bout with Nightingale and Mone.

Khan stated that it was fair to call Willow’s win an upset victory as she took advantage of the injury. He also said that the company have plans for Willow, which is why when NJPW asked for a top star for the tournament, he sent Nightingale.
On Mercedes Mone and her injury, Tony Khan stated that “no one knows except Mercedes and myself” what was going to happen with her appearing exclusively in New Japan or possibly making an appearance in AEW.

NJPW released a statement on May 25 in regards to Mercedes Mone’s injury.
AEW and NJPW will be teaming up for the upcoming Forbidden Door pay-per-view from Toronto, Ontario, Canada on June 25.
