Some potential legal hurdles have been reported to be causing issues for AEW and an expected new signing to the company.
According to a new report from Luchablog, AEW has reached an agreement on a deal with former AAA Latin American Champion Black Taurus.
Black Taurus has carved out a storied career in Mexico across AAA and CMLL and has found exposure stateside in recent years through appearances for TNA/IMPACT, and most recently a pair of matches on AEW Rampage and ROH TV against El Hijo Del Vikingo.
While AEW is clearly keen for more of Taurus on their programming, it seems as if doing so may come with its fair share of legal obstacles to overcome.
These specifically, according to Luchablog, are in regards to the Black Taurus character itself and a complicated situation between Taurus and AAA over ownership of the gimmick.
As Luchablog explains, Black Taurus originally competed under the name ‘Taurus’ in AAA, however, upon departing the company in 2016 he would alter the name to Black Taurus and would register ownership over this name for his own use.
Upon returning to AAA two years later Black Taurus would return to the ‘Taurus’ moniker, while continuing to use the name he owned the rights to when competing outside the company; something AAA would allow, including when competing for TNA/IMPACT.
However, it seems as if AAA is not entirely ok with Black Taurus continuing to use his name whilst competing for AEW, which may lead to a shift away from using the character altogether, in an attempt to avoid legal issues.
The report notes that while AEW and Black Taurus would have a strong case to continue to use the character and name on their programming, the lengthy recent lawsuit process surrounding Luchasaurus’ mask may dissuade them from risking any problems.
As a result, Luchablog expect Black Taurus to sacrifice the ‘Taurus’ name altogether in favor of something new, with this being something that he was prepared for when moving to AEW.
