A backstage update has emerged on Samoa Joe winning the AEW World Championship at Worlds End 2023.

In the main event of the December 30 AEW pay-per-view, Samoa Joe defeated MJF via technical submission to win the AEW World Title.
Joe became the seventh wrestler ever to hold this title, ending MJF’s 406 day reign with the gold.
It has since been reported that MJF is expected to take some time off following his title loss, with the now-former champion reportedly working through a series of injuries during his title reign.

While this has led to some speculation that Samoa Joe winning the AEW World Title was a late decision, a new report has indicated that this was not the case.
Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, AEW always planned for Samoa Joe to become AEW World Champion at Worlds End.

Meltzer noted:
Joe was always gonna (win). Even before Max (MJF) got hurt, Joe was always going to win the title on this show.
The title did not change hands because (MJF) is hurt. It was always the plan.
