There has been a new backstage update on WWE’s rumored big return of a former WWE Champion at tonight’s Day 1 edition of Monday Night Raw.

One of the biggest talking points of the weekend has been regarding reports of a surprise appearance on the New Year’s Day special of Raw.
These reports were given validation when Triple H himself responded to them, saying he could not “confirm or deny” them to be true but to “stay tuned”.
Naturally, the internet has been buzzing regarding who the mystery man or woman could be; with names such as Mercedes Mone, Big E and Andrade El Idolo being amongst the most wished for from fans.

What has been one of the biggest question marks regarding the whole thing has been the wording of it being a former WWE Champion, with it being unclear whether this pertained to the actual WWE Championship or just any title in WWE history.
In a new report Fightful Select stated that while they could not confirm what WWE’s parameters were to be a former WWE Champion, to them it would be as it reads and include those that held WWE’s most prestigious prize, as opposed to a mid-card title for example.
The uncertainty seems to also be felt backstage in WWE as no talents or creative sources that Fightful spoke to had any idea on the identity of the big return.

What was learned however, was that the individual in question was designated a full mid-show segment as of early Monday afternoon (January 1).
While the identity of the star could not be determined, one previously mentioned name has seemingly been ruled out as Fightful’s WWE sources were told that it would not be Mercedes Mone making her return in San Diego, CA.
One far more likely scenario, albeit one that also couldn’t be confirmed was The Rock, who was just a few hours away from Raw in Pasadena, CA for College Gameday.

When Fightful mentioned this to a WWE higher-up they admitted it was a “compelling argument”, but they could not “confirm or deny” it to be true.
Make sure to stay tuned to WrestleTalk for any further updates on the situation as well as coverage of everything that transpires on Monday Night Raw as it happens.
