A match at the WWE Crown Jewel 2023 Premium Live Event has broken a record that had previously stood for 48 years.

One of the biggest talking points from WWE’s latest Saudi PLE extravaganza was Logan Paul capturing his first ever championship in WWE.
With some assistance from some brass knuckles, Paul dethroned United States Champion Rey Mysterio, earning a major endorsement from WWE’s Chief Content Officer Triple H in the process.
But that wasn’t the only feather in Paul’s cap as the result was also one that made history.

As pointed out by Twitter account ‘Wrestling Stats & Info’ ahead of Crown Jewel, if Paul defeated Mysterio then it would mark the first time in the 48 year history of the United States Championship that the title would be both won and lost outside of the United States.
Paul of course won the title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, while Mysterio had dethroned Austin Theory to begin his reign on the August 11 edition of SmackDown from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The US Championship was first introduced in Jim Crockett Promotions in 1975, and would later become WCW’s staple mid-card championship until its closure in 2001.

Following the Raw and SmackDown brand split in 2002, the blue brand was in need of its own mid-card championship, with Raw housing the Intercontinental title.
This would see WWE re-introduce the US Title in 2003, however, the past lineage of the belt would remain, as it does to this day.
