WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER has explained why he used to despise WWE, admitting that he wasn’t a fan of the product when training as a wrestler.

With GUNTHER now established as one of WWE’s most dominant stars, it’s often forgotten that at one point it appeared that the Austrian would never join WWE’s main roster.
While GUNTHER was previously reluctant to move to the US, he eventually joined NXT UK in 2019, before jumping to the US NXT brand in 2022, ahead of his main roster call-up later that year.
Speaking with WrestlingNews.co, GUNTHER admitted that he wasn’t a WWE fan when he was training up as a wrestler.

Stating that he ‘kind of despised’ the WWE product at one point, he said:
“When I grew up, as a wrestler not when I was a kid, but when I was wrestling and diving in deep and trying to get better and stuff
“I don’t know; I kind of despised WWE at that point because I didn’t like watching it.
“I was focused on I want to be a wrestler, and I want to be…yeah. I want to focus on that athleticism, and everything around it was too much for my personal taste in that time.”

GUNTHER is now the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history, defeating Ricochet for the gold in June 2022.
