AEW President Tony Khan has publicly addressed the negative responses CM Punk has been receiving from a large portion of audiences thus far.

Despite returning to sheer jubilation from his home-town faithful in Chicago Illinois on the June 16 Collision premiere, Punk has received much more mixed receptions ever since.
This is perhaps unsurprising given AEW’s current Canadian tour and Punk’s known problems with notable Winnipeg-native Kenny Omega and his Elite friends, with even Tony Khan not the slightest bit surprised by Punk’s predominantly negative response.

Khan said in an appearance on Busted Open Radio:
“I wasn’t surprised about that at all given that we were in Canada and given some of the things that had happened in the lead up to the show and in particular since the last time he wrestled, so I think as we go on the road, we are going to get a lot of great responses, but just like a sports team, it depends on where you’re at.
“Some sports teams are really popular in home cities, and then when they go on the road, it depends, and definitely I thought this was a road game for him.
“He did great.”

Punk certainly hasn’t shied away from playing the bad guy during matches where appropriate, particularly at Forbidden Door in his win against Satoshi Kojima.
While it’s unclear whether it will be positive or negative, CM Punk is undoubtedly set to receive a rapturous response when AEW makes its overseas debut for All In at Wembley Stadium on August 27.
