CM Punk has been officially announced as the special guest referee for an upcoming championship match in WWE.

Taking a break from his feud with Drew McIntyre, Punk appeared on tonight’s NXT, two weeks before the show debuts on The CW in his hometown of Chicago.
In the ring tonight, Punk would note that he had enjoyed trying to sneakily watch NXT in the arena while rehabbing from his injury, despite being frequently caught by NXT fans.
He went on to name Lexis King and Ethan Page as two stars he believes he will eventually cross paths with (but didn’t mention their shared AEW past) on the main roster.
He also added “not to start any rumors” but before saying he’s sure he’ll eventually be in the ring with Bron Breakker and, also shouted out SmackDown’s Carmelo Hayes as an NXT success.

Punk said he begged to let Shawn Michaels to be on the October 1 Chicago show on The CW, and the “reckless 1995 version” of Shawn came out and told Punk he could do “anything he wanted” on the show.
Before Punk was able to reveal his plan however, he was interrupted by NXT Woman’s Champion, Roxanne Perez.
Perez started off apologetic about the interruption and pointed out that she loved Punk as a young fan, but she quickly turned on him and said she “should have been a Drew McIntyre fan”.

After Perez turned her attention to Giulia, she would inevitably appear, and as Perez tried to attack her from behind, Punk stepped in between her and prevented her from doing so.
However, with no actual announcement made, later CM Punk would appear once again in the main event segment of tonight’s show.
Punk got in the ring after Ethan Page and Trick Williams signed the contract for their NXT Championship match, and announced that he will be the special guest referee.

So, on October 1, with NXT debuting on The CW and the show taking place in Chicago, it’s officially Ethan Page defending the NXT Championship against Trick Williams, with Punk as the referee.
In other big news revealed tonight, the following week on the October 8 NXT in Missouri, Randy Orton has been announced for a match against Je’Von Evans.
