In amongst all the recent talk about CM Punk, an update has emerged on the AEW status of his close friend Ace Steel.

Steel was fired by AEW last year after his involvement in the backstage fight at All Out, but was soon rehired.
News of his rehiring emerged just before the debut of AEW Collision a couple of months ago, as it was a point of contention between Tony Khan and CM Punk that Steel wouldn’t be allowed backstage at shows even though he was back working with the company.
This is what led to Punk being pulled from all the pre-advertising for Collision until things got worked out.
Fast forward to now, and it’s still having an effect, as the reason Christopher Daniels has effectively been told he’s not allowed backstage at Collision is because Steel isn’t either, and Punk views that as unfair.

In an update on what exactly Steel has been up to, Fightful Select reports that he is indeed on the payroll, but “hasn’t been seen”.
According to Fightful, Steel was told before Collision started that he was viewed as an “insurance risk”, and that’s why he wouldn’t be allowed at shows.
Steel had met with Tony Khan and it was decided that he’d be able to return to AEW in some capacity but not be travelling, and he’d be able to work outside of AEW as well.

Steel and Khan reportedly have “periodic conversations” which includes suggesting things for CM Punk specifically.
“The word” is that Steel’s AEW deal is up in Fall of 2024. It was also mentioned that it was suggested he received back pay for the time he was away from the company.
