An AEW star has vacated a championship in another company due to a recent knee injury.
AAA Lucha Libre have announced that El Hijo Del Vikingo is vacating his AAA Mega Championship due to injury, with the 26-year-old recently undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus on February 29.
A new champion is set to be crowned at AAA TripleMania XXXII in Monterey on April 27.
The first competitor to qualify for the vacant AAA Mega Championship bout was former WWE star Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio), who defeated Cibernetico and Psycho Clown in a three-way last night (March 16).
Prior to being vacated, Vikingo had held the AAA Mega Championship for a whopping 833 days, the longest single reign in its history.
Vikingo’s run with title began back on December 4, 2021, winning a five-way bout after fellow AEW star Kenny Omega vacated the title due to injury.
During his 833 day run, Vikingo made his AEW debut – competing against Omega on AEW Dynamite almost exactly a year ago on March 22, 2022.
Since then he has competed on AEW and ROH programming, with his most recent bout coming on the January 31 edition of ROH TV.
JJA Sport Studio will provide further updates on Vikingo’s status as/when they become available.
