Since its inception, Tony Khan has managed to sign a number of free agents to AEW who have had interest from WWE.
Recent signings have included Will Ospreay, Mercedes Mone (Sasha Banks), Kazuchika Okada and Deonna Purrazzo.
Ospreay has previously discussed his reasons for signing with AEW noting that he was able to “be in the UK.”
He would also reveal that WWE was “not as good of pay and it’s not as kind of a schedule” when compared to what AEW offered him.
Recently, AEW owner Tony Khan appeared on Cincy 360 and gave his insight into why he thinks AEW is better than WWE, saying:
“We have, what I believe is the most exciting matches and we have great stories happening.
“We’re really a challenger brand. We’re fighting against an establishment, and we’ve built a huge fanbase in a pretty quick time.
“People that love the fast-paced, exciting action, and the interviews. In AEW, I think people really feel a connection with the wrestlers. We don’t script the interviews here.
“I think that’s one major difference. I think our biggest strength is the quality of athletes and the charisma of our biggest stars.”
He would also reveal why he thinks “big free agents” choose to sign with AEW, stating:
“Some of the biggest names in wrestling are in AEW, and there’s a reason why these big free agents want to come here to AEW. It’s because this is where the best wrestle.”
Mercedes Mone made her AEW debut at Big Business in March 2024 with it being report that her deal “likely makes her the top-paid female performer in the history of wrestling.”
Kazuchika Okada also debuted in March 2024, with it being reported that his deal is “for three years and is worth roughly $4.5 million per year.”
