Current ROH Women’s World Champion Athena has discussed conversations with Tony Khan about her AEW return.
At ROH Death Before Dishonor, Athena defeated Queen Aminata to retain the ROH Women’s World Championship. “The Fallen Goddess” has now held the title for a record-breaking 600 days and stands as the second longest reigning champion in Ring of Honor history.
With “The Minion Overlord” on her way to becoming the longest reigning champion in ROH history, many fans have been wondering when she will make her return to AEW programming.
In a new interview with Stephanie Chase ahead of Death Before Dishonor, Athena revealed that she often has conversations with Tony Khan about her AEW return. She said:
“It’s something that Tony and I talk about quite a bit in person,”
“It’s like, ‘Okay, we did Battle of the Belts, we’re sprinkling it here and there. We’ve done pre-shows on multiple pay-per-views with myself and Billie [Starkz] and Lexi [Nair] in there as well.’ I think it’s just a matter of time.”
With Timeless Toni Storm set to defend the AEW Women’s World Championship against Mariah May and Mercedes Mone battling with Britt Baker over the TBS Championship, there seems to be a logjam in the AEW women’s division.
However, Athena believes that she is the best kept secret for the division and waiting for her opportunity to show it. She said:
“When I come to AEW, I’m beating the breaks off of all these hussies, and they’re not going to be able to stand toe-to-toe. So if I’m the best kept secret, they should have been watching ROH,”
Athena is just 45 days away from passing Samoa Joe’s ROH World Championship reign from 2003 and 2004 to become the longest reigning champion in Ring of Honor history at the time of this writing.
