A top AEW star is set for a major championship match in another company amid their ongoing absence from TV.
Since losing her AEW Women’s World Championship to Mariah May at All In London last month, Toni Storm has been completely absent from programming.
With May now seemingly moving on to a storyline with Mina Shirakawa following this week’s Dynamite (September 11), it’s unclear when Storm will make her return for a rematch with her former protege.
While that remains to be seen, it seems as if Storm has her eyes on a different championship in the mean time, as it was announced that she would be challenging Mayu Iwatani for the IWGP Women’s Championship at Stardom Nagoya Golden Fight on October 5.
The challenge was made by Storm via a video package during Stardom’s Namba Grand Fight event in Osaka today (September 14) after Iwatani and Hanan defeated AZM & Miyu Amasaki.
Storm said:
“Did you forget about me? Stardom, do you remember who I am? Because I have never forgotten you. I have done a lot in your land and I will always respect Japanese pro wrestling but there is one thing that I must do.
“In 2017, I became the World of Stardom Champion. Some say it was a mistake. I must prove that it wasn’t. October 5, Nagoya, I challenge you Mayu Iwatani for the IWGP Women’s Championship.”
Despite holding gold in WWE, AEW and Stardom among others, Storm has yet to capture the IWGP Women’s Championship in her career.
To do so however, she’ll have to end the over 500 day title reign of Iwatani, which began back in April 2023 when she defeated AEW’s Mercedes Moné.
