16-time world champion John Cena has publicly addressed his status for WWE’s upcoming WrestleMania 40 event.
With the Road to WrestleMania set to kick off at this Saturday’s Royal Rumble (January 27), fans are naturally questioning that status of some of the company’s all-time greats who are still semi-active in the ring.
While The Rock is the big one due to his recent tease of a long-awaited clash with Roman Reigns, John Cena’s name has also arose due to his recent return to the company in the autumn of 2023.
In a run that came about due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, Cena underwent what was his most consistent run of appearances in quite some time; including two back-to-back Premium Live Event matches at Fastlane and Crown Jewel.
However, the run ended on a note that seemed to tease that Cena could potentially be set to hang up his boots, or at least that’s what WWE and Cena wanted us to believe.
But fear not as in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cena teased a potential return at WrestleMania 40 in nearly two months time; however would suggest he intends to step aside for the next generation of talent soon.
Cena said:
“I don’t know if I’ll be free that weekend, but it is a weekend and movies don’t shoot on the weekends.
“But when I say I’m done — in WWE, they say never say never and a lot of people retire and come back — I’m just being honest with myself.
“There’s such a great new generation now as well. It’s time to pass the electric energy on to the folks that can be there every day.”
Cena’s last match saw him decimated at the hands of The Bloodline’s Solo Sikoa at Crown Jewel, which continued his unfortunate losing streak in singles matches that stretches back over five years.
One of those losses came at last year’s WrestleMania 39, in which he lost to then United States Champion Austin Theory.
