“The Rated R Superstar” Adam Copeland has explained how his AEW Dynamite “dream match” with NJPW’s Minoru Suzuki came together.
AEW CEO Tony Khan got the wrestling world buzzing with the announcement of an international dream match between Adam Copeland and NJPW star Minoru Suzuki on the January 24 edition of AEW Dynamite.
This is the latest bout in the Cope Open, which has been the open challenge series for Copeland to work his way back to challenge Christian Cage for the TNT Championship again.
In a new interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Adam Copeland was asked how his match with Suzuki on AEW Dynamite came together. He answered:
“I thought Suzuki and I would be really cool,”
“It’s something you wouldn’t even think of until you think of it, right? It’s going to be hard-hitting. And the word that keeps coming to mind is grizzled. But I never thought this match would ever happen.”
“So I asked Tony, ‘Can we get Suzuki?’ He said he’d find out. As soon as he found out, literally as soon as he got off the phone, he advertised it on air.”
Revealing how he found out about the match in the locker room from former three-time AEW World Champion Jon Moxley, Copeland explained:
“I’m sitting in the locker room getting changed, and Moxley says to me, ‘Hey man, it’s you and Suzuki next week,’”
“So you can only imagine my excitement. Immediately, I’m thinking, ‘I need to cut a promo about it.’”
Copeland cut a fired up promo that was posted on the AEW social media pages to hype up this Wednesday’s bout.
When asked which of his past opponents reminds him of Suzuki, Copeland replied:
“I was thinking about that, and it’s tough. Bradshaw, when he was with the Acolytes, had a similarish vibe, but it was still different. I can’t think of anybody who is like him.”
