Current AEW International Champion Will Ospreay has discussed his rivalry with former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega.
At NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17, Kenny Omega made his return to New Japan Pro Wrestling to compete for the first time since 2019. On the show, Omega defeated Will Ospreay to win the IWGP United States Championship.
After defeating Lance Archer at Dominion, Ospreay went on to defeat Omega to regain the IWGP United States Championship in a 40-minute battle at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023.
Speaking with Kenny McIntosh for the Inside The Ropes Magazine, Will Ospreay discussed his rivalry with Kenny Omega. He said:
“I think he represents the identity of what AEW initially was.”
“He didn’t need the machine to make himself a big superstar, he made himself a star along with The Bucks, along with Hangman, and everyone else that helped to set up the company. There was an identity about AEW that was different to what American TV was accustomed to.”
“Those guys really set the bar for what wrestling could look like. It could have a different image and it could have a different identity. Especially when it comes to TV-style wrestling.”
“Those guys completely shifted what it looked like to be TV wrestlers. He’s one of the best and I give him all the flowers in the world, but that doesn’t mean I like him [laughs]. Other than that, he’s a pr**k.”
Kenny Omega is currently out of action after undergoing surgery for diverticulitis in May.
Meanwhile, Will Ospreay is scheduled to defend the AEW International Championship against PAC this Saturday, September 7 at All Out.
