On October 2, 2024, it was revealed that Taz had been attacked in the parking lot and wouldn’t be on AEW Dynamite.

Taz would later reveal that the attackers had “destroyed” his leg, promising that there is “going to be HELL to pay and not by me” in later tweets.
With Taz unable to fulfil his role on the commentary table for AEW Dynamite’s Fifth-Year Anniversary, he would be replaced by Nigel McGuinness.

Dave Meltzer revealed why Taz was written off television in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, reporting:
The story that he was attacked and injured was a cover story because he’ll be out for a while as he’s getting full knee replacement surgery.
His knees have been bad for years. It’s been noted how much it appears he’s hurting by the way he walks around backstage and he basically confirmed that and his wife pushed him to get this taken care of.

Taz has now confirmed that he will have total knee replacement surgery and will be out for a while, tweeting:

The September 25 episode of AEW Dynamite saw HOOK retain the FTW Championship, handing it back to his father and retiring the title.
The title retirement took place after HOOK faced Roderick Strong with highlights below this news story.
Taz made his first AEW appearance in October 2019 and has served as commentator since signing with the company in January 2020.

He was the inaugural FTW Heavyweight Champion in ECW and had two reigns with the title with HOOK holding the belt for three reigns.
JJA Sport Studio wishes Taz well and his surgery and recovery process.
