A new report has revealed the real reason for former two-time WWE Champion AJ Styles being chosen for a crossover match.
As previously reported, Pro Wrestling NOAH announced that AJ Styles will face Naomichi Marufuji on Saturday, July 13 at NOAH’s Destination event.
This followed NOAH promoting that they had a major announcement involving WWE for their June 16 Grand Ship show.
According to Tokyo Sports, Cyber Fight’s Director Arihiro Takeda nominated AJ Styles for the bout at NOAH Destination.
Meanwhile, the report also notes that WWE nominated Japanese legend Naomichi Marufuji for the match against Styles.
In the automated translation from Japanese, the article states:

Meanwhile, his opponent Marufuji was nominated by WWE. “It was like there was only one choice. If there’s a Noah wrestler who’s well-known in America, it’s got to be Marufuji. He’s a Japanese legend. I think it also has to do with the fact that there are PPVs (for Noah) over there.”
Takeda previously stated that he was looking to strengthen the working relationship with WWE as one of his goals for the company.
AJ Styles last wrestled in a loss to Cody Rhodes in an I Quit Match for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash At The Castle.
