Following the recent announcement, a new report has revealed the backstage reaction to WWE star Meiko Satomura’s retirement.
On July 25, Tokyo Sports reported that Meiko Satomura is set to retire in 2025, with the former NXT UK Women’s Champion confirming the news a few days later.
Satomura signed with WWE in 2020 and became a talent as well as a coach for the NXT UK brand.
In 2022, Meiko would make the jump to the U.S. version of NXT, where she last wrestled in a match against Roxanne Perez for the NXT Women’s Championship on the March 7, 2023 Roadblock special of NXT.
Fightful Select provided an update, noting that NXT sources have indicated that Meiko Satomura has not been present at an NXT taping since then, nor has she been coaching at the WWE Performance Center.
However, Satomura has been part of WWE’s recent tour in Japan and she previously competed at Fortune Dream 9, which Meiko asked WWE’s permission to compete and remains under contract.
The report notes that only Meiko and WWE higher ups were aware of Satomura’s reasoning for her absence from the company’s programming.
However, NXT talent had stated their belief Meiko was looking to finish out her WWE contract, with a return to NXT TV not expected by those Fightful spoke to.
In regards to Satomura being used on WWE television, there was no indication that there were plans for that and when they asked about a possible WrestleMania bout, the idea was met with doubt.
Those within NXT were not surprised to hear of the Joshi legend’s retirement announcement due to her lack of involvement in the brand over the past 18 months.
Those who worked with Meiko in NXT UK and later NXT had nothing but praise for her coaching, while others in NXT lamented the fact that Satomura did not have a longer run on the brand.
While still under WWE contract, sources have indicated that they are of the belief Meiko is focused on growing her own promotion, Sendai Girls, which she founded in 2005.
Satomura’s final retirement tour is slated to be based in Japan, with a return to the United States is unlikely, but not impossible.
