The real reason why AEW booked Swerve Strickland vs. Will Ospreay at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door has been revealed.

Swerve Strickland defended his AEW World Championship against Will Ospreay in the main event of the Forbidden Door pay-per-view, picking up the win in an epic clash;
When the match was announced, a lot of fans were surprised that AEW was running the match at Forbidden Door, with many believing it would be the main event for AEW All In in August.
The match happening so soon led to divided opinion among fans, and we now know the real reason why the match was booked for Forbidden Door.

Per Fightful Select, Ospreay had grown tired of seeing fans claim that Swerve’s title run was a ‘placeholder’ reign before Ospreay would win the title at Wembley.
Those within AEW told Fightful that Ospreay approached AEW higher ups and stated his desire to put Strickland over to help eliminate that talking point, given Ospreay already has big creative plans in store for the rest of the year, and wanted to set an example that for the company to succeed, it had to be a team effort.
Fightful said that Ospreay made the approach to put Swerve over after winning the International Championship, wanting to show that nobody should be above losing to the World Champion, with some in the company claiming that a ‘point was being proven’ as a result.

As far as AEW All In, while many had expected Swerve vs. Ospreay at the show, that was said to have never been the plan, and both have different opponents planned for the show.
AEW sources told Fightful that Ospreay has been great to deal with in the company, and has often helped out when needed, including others asking him for help putting together matches.
